Ten Lessons Millennials Can Learn from The Alchemist

by Pauline
The Alchemist is a well-known book that likes of Pharrel have attributed to it changing their lives. Oprah  also loves The Alchemist and even interviewed the author Paulo Coelho on her super soul Sunday conversations.

As famous as it is now it wasn’t always so. The alchemist was not a hit seller after it was first published.   Paulo told Oprah that after it didn’t sell he took it to a big publishing house in brazil. He explained to them that he had a published book that didn’t sell but he trusted it would sell and they took the book and published it.

The book hit when it was supposed to because Paulo recalls Madonna telling Oprah the book changed her life. At that moment, he believed the book would sell but it didn’t.

Then Bill Clinton was photographed with the book and Paulo again believed that now it had to sell but still nothing happened. Most celebrities like will smith and Julia Roberts talked about it and that didn’t change much.

But then it got to a point and the book started selling. It was a bestseller on the New York times for over 300 weeks. People had realized the worth of this book.

It’s a story about a young shepherd-Santiago-who embarks on a journey to find his personal legend. A personal legend as described in the book is “what you have always wanted to accomplish.” And Paulo also expounded that it’s the only thing that gives you enthusiasm.

“You will know that you are betraying your personal legend when you are doing something without enthusiasm, you have this good excuse, I am not ready, I have to wait for the right moment.” Paulo told Oprah-explaining on finding one’s personal legend.

Paulo Coelho says he fought for his dream, he wanted to be a writer and he wrote the alchemist sharing his wisdom on life with us. Here are some of the lessons from the book;

  1. At a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate.

Apparently, this is the world’s greatest lie and most people end up believing that. This, the book explains is a lie people believe because they believe they are unable to choose their own personal legend.

Woman Enough

When life hits us hard we tend to surrender to it and accept what is handed to us. It’s a difficult place to be but we are always in control. We always have the power to change our life a day at a time.

  1. Whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it’s because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. It’s your mission on Earth”

The great desires we have in our hearts are from God. He gives us the wisdom to arouse those desires in us. Have courage to pursue them. It doesn’t mean it will be easy but you staying on will pay off when it’s supposed to, like the Alchemist book.

  1. And when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.

I hope we have all experienced this. Think harder, you have.

The universe is always listening so when you want something it sends you help along the way. You meet someone who knows someone. You find a place where you can start your business, you start running into people you can partner in business.

It’s not magic. It’s what you are putting out there, it’s the work you are putting out. It’s opportunity meeting preparedness.

4.People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of

It’s never too late to start over again. To go back to school, to start a new business or move to a new city.

I resonate with this because at some point I have felt like I am a late bloomer. I have done the comparison game and it’s worse when comparing myself with someone younger. I remind myself that I am still young and I can take risks and start all over again when one thing fails.

  1. And when each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.

I read this and remembered how I have benefitted from my gratitude journal. Counting my blessings when I feel like nothing is going on great in my life.

Gratitude opens up doors and great opportunities. It’s a reminder that because you have you’re your mountains been moved even this one you shall overcome.

Each day comes with its blessings, we are just too focused on the wrong things that we miss the blessings.

  1. When you want something with all your heart, that’s when you are closest to the soul of the world. It’s always a positive force.

Don’t give up when it feels like you have given your all and what you want most isn’t here yet. You are closer to the end of the tunnel than you think.

  1. Forget about the future, and live each day according to the teachings, confident that God loves his children. Each day, in itself, brings with it an eternity.

Oh! how I needed to read this. To be reminded that I shouldn’t be anxious about anything. That worrying about the future only makes today hard about something I have no idea exists.

  1. People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them.

Affirmations! Affirmations! Remind yourself of your power.  I am currently reading ‘The Power of Your Sub-Conscious Mind’ and one affirmation it speaks about is reminding yourself that it’s your right to be rich, happy and successful.

Believe in yourself like your self is all you got because sometimes that’s true.

  1. When you possess great treasures within you, and try to tell others of them, seldom are you believed.

Again, the calling is on you not others, no need holding a campaign to convince them anything.

  1. Love would never keep a man from his personal legend

I love love. Pure, unconditional love. The kind that pushes you to be a better person and believes in you. The kind that sets you free to go out and become your best version.
